I got wayyy too many asks about the flowers to put in one picture so I’ll reply to all of y’all in this post.
First let’s look at the original:
Looks rather plain, lol. Distinctive for the most part. Let’s assume Studio Deen might have asked him later for the animation, hence the increase in detail.
Some think it’s a cornflower, but I just don’t see it.
Since this comic was heavy on imagery, I don’t think Hima would have half-assed the doodle. If he did, it should look spikier and not like a common doodle of a flower. The center wouldn’t be circular either.
The first guess before the episode came out was Forget-Me-Nots
Unfortunately that doesn’t cut it anymore since it’s clearly not the same. Notice they’re grown in multiples, and have some extra detail in their centers.
Now, it says ‘daisy’ on the book (to me anyway) to which a wonderful anon expanded the sentence and was able to read ‘The daisy is a perennial flower.’ That checks out!
Helpful people have informed me of the Felicia Amelloides, otherwise known as the ‘blue marguerite’ or simply ‘blue daisy’ native to South Africa. This doesn’t make sense at first, except that England had colonies there at the time this comic might have taken place (possibly 1600s - 1607 was when Jamestown was founded). This might explain why Davie knew of it, and only England could get it for America. Also why it took so long (remember people traveled for months on a ship back then.)
I think that’s a solid deal, and am rather convinced it was this flower.
Another anon also said it might be a plain white daisy that Hima took artistic liberties with because the comic was mainly white, and it wouldn’t pop otherwise. This also makes sense, so you can take your pick!
According to the animator’s note (assuming they verified with Himaruya), the blue flower is indeed a blue daisy.
